Living to Serve

Posted by Hailey Lange at 11/17/2016

As has become tradition in September, Hope FFA set up their legendary blue building in preparation for a long, fun Heritage Days weekend! This years’ Heritage Days was much like the past as the booth sold their famous mozzarella sticks, fried pickles, chicken sandwiches, and home cut fries with a variety of drinks, but it was also a very unique year for the Hope FFA chapter. Macie Hill, along with her parents, set their Cones for a Cause booth right next to the FFA building. Cones for a Cause is a non-profit organization that Macie started to help other organizations that she is a part of, or the ones who come to her and ask for her help. She and her family go to events such as Heritage Days and Smoke on the Square to sell cones for basically anyone who asks. Macie says “I started it because I wanted to give back to the community, and I know that having an organization of any sort can be very costly. A little extra support never hurts”.

Macie is an FFA member and wanted to contribute to the Heritage Days fundraiser. She came to Mrs. Dickerson this year and asked to set up their stand right next to the FFA building and donate all profits to the Hope FFA Chapter. Mrs. Dickerson and the Officers were excited to benefit from these efforts and thankful that the Hill Family thought of the chapter. After a very successful weekend, they were able to donate nearly $280.00. Hope FFA is proud of members like Macie who are living out the FFA motto with their willingness to serve their organization and community.

5. What's your favorite thing about FFA? -Probably the activities we do, we always have a good time but we also make sure to get our business done when needed.

6. What's your best memory about FFA? - The officer retreat we had the weekend before school started. I had an amazing time! I love our officers and the new people we got to meet there and at the state fair.

7. What's your favorite FFA event to attend? - THE CHAPTER KICKOFF! We have so much fun and it sets the tone for the rest of the year.

8. What are you looking forward to this year in FFA? - Just the experience. It's my first year as an officer and I can't wait to be able to learn and meet new people.

10. Please list any other things that you think are important in FFA or that you enjoy about FFA.
-Definitely participation. A lot of people think that FFA is all fun and games. Don't get me wrong I have a blast in FFA but we also have stuff that needs to be done in order for our chapter to thrive. FFA isn't something to just go to one meeting just so you can put it on a college resumé. You don't learn from that. I promise if you actually participate and go to events and meetings, you will have a great time and come out with a better experience in FFA.

Meet the officer! -Annie Ashbrook

Posted by Hailey Lange at 8/25/2016

Annie

Name: Annie Ashbrook

Grade: 12th

Officer Position: Secretary

1. What's your favorite color?
Yellow!

2. What's your favorite animal?
I love all animals, but in particular llamas and puppies.

3. Why did you join FFA?
I mainly joined because our advisor, Mrs. Dickerson, convinced me by telling me about all of the field trips our chapter takes. I went to my first FFA event my freshman year and after learning about the multitude of activities I could be involved in, how many new friends I would make, and all of the free food, I was hooked.

4. How many years have you been in FFA?
I have been a member since my freshman year, so I am in my fourth year as an FFA member.

5. What's your favorite thing about FFA?
FFA isn't a place for a certain group of kids; there is a place for everyone in this organization. My favorite thing is that no matter your background, what other activities you are involved in, or your knowledge on agriculture, you can get involved! There is something in FFA for everyone. You are able to meet so many new people and learn tons of new things, all it takes is getting involved.

6. What's your best memory about FFA?
I have too many to choose my favorite! Some would be crazy chapter meetings, long bus rides with the officer teams, attending camps at the Indiana FFA Leadership Center, and having the opportunity to attend National and State convention for the past few years. My top two favorite memories are placing third in the state for my food science demonstration and attending Washington Leadership Conference.

7. What's your favorite FFA event to attend?
I love attending the camps and conferences available in FFA! Camps are held at the Indiana FFA Leadership Center in Trafalgar, Indiana. That is where I have personally grown as a leader, made some of my best friends, and have many great memories tied to the center. I also love attending contests and competing in them!

8. What are you looking forward to this year in FFA?
I am looking forward to competing in leadership development events, serving with the Hope FFA Officer team, and making the most out of my final year.

9. Who is your biggest influence in FFA?
Josh Calhoun has definitely served as my biggest influence. He encouraged me to join and get involved my freshman year, and supported and pushed me through my sophomore and junior year to become the best member and leader I could be. He showed me that when things don't go the way you planned, you can't give up. Josh showed me how important it is to work towards your goals with your whole heart and to passionately lead. I am so grateful for his influence.

10. Please list any other things that you think are important in FFA or that you enjoy about FFA. I truly believe there is a place in FFA for everyone. Not coming from an agricultural background, it was easy to fall under the "only for farm kids" impression. As I got more involved, I learned you don't even need to live near a farm to be in FFA. Another thing I would tell people is to get as involved as possible. Your years of membership will go by so quickly, so take every opportunity possible. Attend the camps, compete in that contest, and always be willing to step out of your comfort zone.
